Sorry everyone, I have been slow in getting around to this post. Our next book is going to be Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Here is a blurb about it from Amazon: "Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Coauthor Relin recounts Mortenson's efforts in fascinating detail, presenting compelling portraits of the village elders, con artists, philanthropists, mujahideen, Taliban officials, ambitious school girls and upright Muslims Mortenson met along the way. As the book moves into the post-9/11 world, Mortenson and Relin argue that the United States must fight Islamic extremism in the region through collaborative efforts to alleviate poverty and improve access to education, especially for girls."Tuesday, October 28, 2008

I have started reading it and love it so far. It makes me want to go outside and hike and then go build a school somewhere. Can't wait to see how the rest goes!
So I am about 100 pages in and starting to wonder wether this guy really thought through anything...hence the bridge! I would be so nervous leaving those building supplies lying around Pakistan with all of those school-hungry villages (not that I blame them!) So are you ready to tackle K2 yet Alyson, I will have to train a little bit, and find a babysitter for about 4 months, but I am in.
ha! Train a LITTLE bit? I would have to work for YEARS! And yeah, did he really think he was going to get the supplies over on that cable car? But, I guess it was a learning process for him too since he really had no idea what he was doing. I really like it so far. Some of the land description can get a bit tedious, but overall I think it is really interesting.
I finished the book today! It was so good! If I had any money that was not loaned to me from the federal government for educational purposes I think that I would hand it over to Greg Mortenson. I serioulsy can't believe what he has accomplished. And I really loved all of the people that Mortenson met in Pakistan and Afghanistan, they were so fascinating.
I finished it too and was thoroughly impressed. I feel the same way. He is amazing. Incredible story. And I love his thoughts on fighting terrorism with education. I think that is so true and a rare message. I want to find ways to go there. maybe in the future, when we are doctor's wives, we can go over there sometime and help. That would be amazing! He really has to have an amazing personality and way of making people feel at ease around him in order to do all of the things he did over there.
I am in! Let's go!
